About Me

My photo
I am a wife to the most amazing husband (Eric) and a mother to 2 wonderful kids (Jessica and Evan). My family is my world. I have recently put my career as a medical assistant on hold to be a stay-at-home mom/wife. We want to raise kids with manners and still have a strong family, so I am always trying ideas to help make things easier on me (cleaning tips, organization, meal planning, crafts, etc.) I thought I would share them with everyone out there. So, please comment with your ideas, or if you have tried one posted on here (Did you like it?) I am always open to suggestions. I am also looking for money savers. It's my new passion now that there is only 1 income.

Budget Basics

I have yet to come across a person who says "Oh my God, I can't wait to do the budget tonight!" With that said, we all (unless you found a money tree, and in that case, you better start sharing) need to budget. No matter how much money you bring in, you need to make sure you aren't over-spending.

Let me tell you how I first realized I needed to budget. When I got out "on my own" I thought budgeting meant calling the bank to hear the balance in my checking account before purchasing whatever it was I wanted. Needless to say, it wasn't good.

So, Here is what we do in our house. You don't have to follow it exact, but hopefully it gives you some ideas on how to create and follow your own budget plan.

The first thing we do is post a list of all "bills" and when they are due. I have this in a spreadsheet so I can easily add-on or remove a bill as life goes on. I also note if something is automatically withdrawn from our account so I don't forget to make sure the funds are there. I have overdrawn in the past from forgetting something was to come out. We keep this on our refrigerator. (If someone is going stop over, it will be removed from sight)

The other budgeting tip I have is to track yourself. About every 3 months or so, I print out our bank report for a full month. I then go through it and highlight all fast food debits in one color and all other unnecessary spending in another color. I then add the totals together. This keeps us on track as to not throw away our money. (There is a birthday gift amount blacked out in case the birthday person sees this.)

I love to hear tips and tricks other people find works for them, so feel free to comment.

The Container Cupboard

So this isn't really a post of how to do something, it's more of a motivational one. Our container cupboard was down-right SCARY! I have been putting it off for some time now....ok, a looooong time now. But it was to the point where we couldn't find a lid to match anything, and to open the cupboard was risking your life.

Here is the before...

Scary, I know

So with the assistance of mini me, all pieces were removed from the cupboard and it was wiped down.

She's looking like, "Now what?"

Hey! There's my ice cubes holder! A lot of good it's doing in there!!!
While the inside of the cupboard was drying, we sorted things into piles. Jess got distracted with the cool popsicle holder/maker (who knew we had that!) but I dove right in to the pile of plastics.

Well these popsicle thingies are the coolest thing ever!

Large storage container pile

Large bowls and measuring thingies
Then, I went through the lids...the evil lids... After finding ones that had containers to match, I was left with a pile that had no partners... :(    They are now in the trash.
All lids that have a container to match

Non matching lids, AKA trash.
So after all was said and done, and Sleeping Beauty was almost awake, the cupboard was organized!

Look it's where it should be!

Weekly Menu Board

This is the post I have looked forward to for weeks! The idea of a menu board was 100% Pinterest inspired. But I wasn't able to find one that fit the space I had. So I sort of combined a few ideas into this board. I cannot wait to plan out our meals for next week this Sunday as I coupon!!!!!

It has taken me weeks to complete it, but don't get scared away, I didn't just work on this board. If I had, it probably would have taken me 2 days. So here is the step-by-step process.

First, I took the chalkboard I already had. (Plain and ugly...I know.)

Next I took stickers to make out the words "Menu" and "Shopping" and sealed them with Mod Podge. This way I can wipe the board clean with a wet rag since it is in my kitchen.  I also painted the trim a green color.

As the painted trim was drying, I took 5 wooden clothes pins and painted them with nail polishes.

As those dried, I took an empty bandaid box and trimmed it to the size I wanted.

I then covered the bandaid box.

After the clothes pins were dry, I used my hotglue gun and attached the pins where I wanted them. I only used 5, because we usually end up eating out 1 day on the weekend and eat at my in-laws the other day of the weekend. So I tend to not plan on cooking on weekends.

Next, I decided to print up the most common meals in our house with all of the ingredients need to make the meal on the back of the card. This way, when I make out my shopping list I will know all the ingredients I need to buy.
After they printed, I lamenated them so I would be able to wipe off anything that would get on them.

Finally, I assembled my board with the menu card holder, a pad of paper, and a sharpie holder (made out of ribbon). I used velcro to attach the pad of paper and card holder, and hot glue to attach the pen holder.

And my menu board was complete!

Recycled Scrap Paper Box

I love taking things that I would normall throw away and make something neat out of it.

This was super easy to make and looks adorable on my desk. Also, where I normally have scrap paper laying around all over, I now have a place for it all.

Take an empty box the size you want your holder to be. (I took an empty sweetener box.)
Cut the box to the height you want.

Cover the box with whatever design you like. (I have been dying to use this pink paper.) I then sealed the box to keep it looking nice in the future. Let dry, and your box is complete!
